Breeding Furs
Starting a new project with extra time and it got me wondering about how in demand certain things are. Of course I've read the wanted forum but then again not everyone posts there so is there any point in mass breeding the following?

Aby Fawn
Shorthair Red Tabby
Russian White

Trying to figure out which way to go here.

Thanks.
Pyx

RE: Breeding Furs
Hi Pyxie, and a very good point to breeding those fur's is the fact they are the first retired. Which means they are no longer a hidden fur in any released starters or collection kitties after there retirement date. Of course Russian White is still largely available, but I have seen very few red tabbies and even now we are starting to see fewer aby fawns. So when these furs are no longer out there (they have been bred out to more recessive furs) then they will be gone.

Another good point in breeding with retired furs is when paired with a newer starter and you get a retired trait back you know for sure that you are hiding something 'different' and more 'recessive' then that fur. Which helps in determining what starters (and other kitties from those starters) are in fact hiding.

"You're just jealous because the kitties only talk to me."

RE: Breeding Furs
Hi Pyxie Smile

I think the demand for those cats depends on who is looking at it or is your potential customer.
I can't resist a good old Red Tabby and all retired furs are so convenient to breed with our starters, as Serena said also, because when we get that fur back we know for a fact that can't be the hidden fur of our starter as well.
I breed Red Tabbies and White Russians always lack of room didn't let me adopt the Fawn yet but the chateau 3 spot for example is in my cattery.
In general I think we should breed what is pleasing to us it gives the most fun in breeding KittyCats is my experience.
Otherwise it is so hard to decide what to breed or not because things go so fast >.<
What today is highly appreciated is a week later old news so I tend not to go with the hype too much unless I like a trait very much.

P.S. Why I think the Red Tabby is extra fun to breed with is that it is the most dominant not Genesis fur so far.

RE: Breeding Furs

I think I've written this notion a half dozen
times in the past six months,
but what the heck, here I go again!

Anytime your 'major' is retail,
as opposed to breeding for the betterment of kitteh-kind,
you're always going to be chasing their tail looking
for the next big thing that sells.

You know whats hot already,
soft black bali pandie foxies, yada yada yada.
The flavors of the month!
EVERYBODY WANTS ONE!
Grab yourself a bunch of fresh starters
and sooner or later some hiddens will
get you on your way.
Or take the quick route and blow the big bucks
at some auction block for some breeding stock.

Problem with that wet dream scenerio is you
have a breeder base the size of Rhode Island
that would like to do the same damn thing.
And its few and far between who are recouping
their kibble bag investments.

You find yourself lowering your expectations
pretty quick around here,
So whats a kittycats enthusiast to do?

Find your niche!

The desired furs for the 'quick buck' breeders are the rarer furs,
and a quality breeding cat of those furs
will be on the pricey side of things.

But your casual kittycats buyer doesnt always
have the incentive to blow 4K to PLAY BALL.

These common folks just want a pretty kitteh
to carry around, and watch it claw the post,
and name it MITTEN or something.

Lots of those people around with a few hundred
leftover in their accounts after shoe shopping.

In this instance its no longer about just fur.
Its now about that fur and EYE combination.
Even if they have no clue what a frisky tail
may be,
they will indeed notice a stylin fur/eye combo.

Take a walk through one of them giant cat malls,
its like a blur of 8 by 10 cat pics!
When they finally rez its like the same thing
over and over again.

Then you have the crazy folk who just park
a $#!tload of boxes with this whacked out cloud
of hovertext over their cart,
with some 8k genesis megapuss leaning on the rack.
You know how many cats these folk sell?
Once in a blue moon!

But have that porcelain lilac siamese with the awesome
blue eyes sitting there, tastefully displayed,
and somebody will wander by and go,
" ooooooooooooooooooooooooh"

Of course, if they are saying "000H!" cus the
price is $4500 thats no good either!

Breed something 'eye catching',
and do it cus it makes you happy!
Best of luck in your endeavors!

RE: Breeding Furs
well said winter, I for one shop and breed for fur/eye combos like you said. I could care less about the rest of the traits because honestly i can't keep track of them to know which one is better than the other. I've spent pretty pennies just on a fur/eye combo and those are the ones i will keep no matter what. You gotta breed for fun and enjoyment, otherwise you will get burnt out and dred ever seeing another box because you already have more then 10 of the same and not one has sold.

Another avenue to try is private selling, which I'm noticing more and more people going to. This way you can take your time and get to know who is going to be buying your cat.

I wish you the best of luck in whatever breeding path you take and hope you enjoy the journey. I know KC has brought me a lot of happiness and comfort over the years and hope it does the same for you.
